We stayed at our timeshare with friends at Pueblo Bonito Rose. It's a beautiful property on the main beach (Medano Beach) within walking distance of many things, or a very short drive to everything else. On Medano beach you can find restaurants/bars, lots of vendors, roped off swimming areas, and all the available water sports. Usually there is a huge ocean liner in the bay during the day. Some of the better known restaurants that are still very good are: Edith's, Peacocks, Felix' for breakfast is wonderful (with American prices) and across the street from Felix' is the Crazy Lobster with great prices, but not quite the service or quality. All along the Marina are some very good restaurants also. Having been to Cabo every other year for over 10 years, I'm always on the lookout for new things. This was my first opportunity to drive up to La Paz, a city about a 2 hour drive north of Cabo San Lucas, over some very scenic and sometime treacherous terrain (although north of Todos Santos they are almost through with a new 4 lane highway). It's claim to fame is the Hotel California, and of course we had to stop and have lunch there. There's plenty of shopping to be had too, but very similar to what you'll find back in Cabo. Then it was on to La Paz. It was a much larger city than I expected, with many American companies there. Along the malecon (boardwalk by the sea) were the gratuitous Carlos and Charlie's type places, intermixed with local fare. The bay at La Paz is huge, with a relatively small opening into the Sea of Cortez. It looked like a pleasant city with some tourist action, but on a completely different level than Cabo. We then journeyed onward and decided to return to Cabo down the Eastern side of the peninsula after crossing over the mountains. It was a little scary in places and you had to pay attention, but all in all had some beautiful scenery. We found one jewel on the return. On the Sea of Cortez about half way between La Paz and San Jose del Cabo sits the quaint little fishing town of Los Barilles. It has beautiful white sand beaches that were wide as well as deep. Fishing boats dotted the ocean in front of the beach. Hotels were up and down the beach and seemed to be the only way to get to the beach (although we couldn't stay long enough to really get the lay of the land). There were fewer vendors here and they weren't as aggressive as back in Cabo. This is a spot I will come back to. It's about 45 minutes north of the Los Cabos airport. San Jose del Cabo has a charm all it's own. Their main drag for shopping is just north of hotel row which is along the ocean. I've always found interesting things here, and there are a couple of restaurants that are very good. Of course the guys utilized a couple of the world-class golf courses in the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. All in all, a week in Los Cabos is not a bad thing! Great weather, good food, good friends, good margaritas and beautiful scenery. *The one negative I advise everyone to look out for is car rentals. The rentals are very reasonable, but adding insurance, which you really should have in any foreign country, doubles the cost of the rental. It's a scam, but you really need to have it so you're trapped.
