Air Booking Sites
Here you will find pro travel tips on air booking sites. Not only can you go directly to the site you are looking for, but each site is reviewed for your convenience. I have found you need to be very careful booking air online.
Always read the fine print at all air booking sites BEFORE you enter a credit card number. Look for additional fees and taxes in particular. Also check on the "extra" costs for checked luggage, food and drink during the flight, etc. Today many airlines are only allowing a credit card to be used for purchases during flight. After over 40 years of flying around the world, I know all these little things add up!
There is a misconception that online air booking site purchases are cheaper. Sometimes this is true and sometimes it's not, especially for international travel or more complicated itineraries. Always check with your travel agent before purchasing.
Also keep in mind that the larger airline ticketing sites will often leave out regional carriers, such as Southwest Airlines, which may be much cheaper. You need to see which carriers go out of your home town and make sure they are all being represented in your searches!
Farebuzz
is especially good for business class travel. They purport to save up to 70% on business class flights. They are also a good comparative site for economy seats. They repeatedly advertise Cheap Air!
One Travel
is a price comparative site that will search several sites at once. I have actually found it to beat the prices of different sites. It also sells a little bit of everything and should be a good cost comparison site for you. They cover most of the major airlines, but I've noticed they don't have Southwest Airlines.
Booking Buddy
searches over 140 travel sites. The downside is you have to look individually at each site, but you only have to enter the information one time. The sites they check are the largest ones on the web.
Priceline.com
has been around since the beginning of online booking. It now sells everything travel, but is good at showing current sales and last minute deals (under the Pricebreakers tab). Again, use it as a tool before making your final choice.
CheapTickets.com
is a product of Orbitz and searches across the web and comes back with the Total Price on multiple airlines. They also sell event tickets. Actually, they sell about every aspect of travel.
Cheap International Airfares
claims to have the cheapest international airfares on the web. This air international air booking site includes group travel and missionary travel and is based out of Atlanta. I haven't tried them out yet because I find it generally cheaper to use a travel agent for international travel. It's well worth a look, but be sure to compare.
Vayama
has thousands of international flights. Good site to compare prices to.
Kayak
is simple to use. It was started by the co-founders of Orbitz, Travelocity and Expedia who wanted to create a better online travel experience. The best part of this air booking site is as soon as you put your destination and dates in, a calendar pops up showing you approximate prices on different days. It's a fun site that repeatedly shows you how to save money by leaving from different airports and traveling on different days.
Fare Compare Air Booking Sites
is another one of our favorites. It will send alerts of cheap airfares, can tell you when the cheapest time to fly is and immediately gives you the rules to get that fare. It also can check cheaper days to fly.
SkyScanner International Flights
is a good site for international flights. It is based in the United Kingdom, so be aware of that and, as with all sites, always check them out thoroughly.
Hotwire
is an Expedia site. We like it because it immediately shows an idea of flight prices from your city to various cities around the country. You can also get all different kinds of travel from Hotwire.
Orbitz
has a price guarantee that says if someone else books your same itinerary for less than you paid, they will automatically send you a check for the difference. Be aware that the itinerary must be EXACT: same days, same accomodations, etc.
Travelocity has a price guarantee like Orbitz. It also allows for flexible dates when searching for your flights. Travelocity has also eliminated booking fees on most flights.
CheapOAir
is another site that checks many websites and also has their own negotiated fares. They handle all aspects of travel and have a price guarantee and a 24/7 help line.
Airline Consolidators
Whenever using a consolidator (a company that buys seats in bulk and sells them at a discount), please check them out carefully. This is one area of travel that has had a lot of scam artists. Travel agents are privy to the legitimate consolidators.
